C38 – Refrigeration Contractor

A refrigeration contractor constructs, fabricates, erects, installs, maintains, services and repairs refrigerators, refrigerated rooms, and insulated refrigerated spaces, temperature insulation, air-conditioning units, ducts, blowers, registers, humidity and thermostatic controls for the control of air, liquid, and/or gas temperatures below fifty degrees Fahrenheit (50 ), or ten degrees Celsius (10 ).

Content of the Examination

The Refrigeration (C-38) Examination is divided into five major sections. These sections are:

1. Job Preparation (11%)

  • Plan/schematics
  • Types of refrigeration systems

2. Installation (23%)

  • Critical path requirements
  • Rough installation
  • System start up and testing

3. Maintenance (18%)

  • Inspections and documentation
  • Preventative maintenance

4. Troubleshooting/Repair (30%)

  • Common refrigeration system problems
  • Troubleshooting techniques/diagnosis
  • System repair

5. Safety (18%)

  • Chemical hazards
  • Working in elevated areas
  • Worker safety/training
  • Electrical hazards

Test Site Policy
   This is a closed-book examination. No reference materials may be used during the examination. All materials brought to the examination site must be left in an unmonitored area at your own risk.

Test Strategy
   This is a multiple choice examination with four choices per question. Some questions require mathematical computation. Examination questions are written to provide only one BEST answer and are NOT written as trick questions.
   All correct answers have equal value and there are no score reductions for wrong answers. Therefore, all examination questions should be answered.
   Ample time is provided to answer all examination questions, so be sure to read each question and its four choices completely and carefully before selecting the best possible answer to the question.

Sample Questions

The following questions are typical of the types of items that are on the examination. The correct answer is highlighted.

1. What is the function of a vacuum pump?

  1. Charge the unit.
  2. Add oil to the compressors.
  3. Remove oil from the compressors.
  4. Remove noncondensible gases from the system.

2. What are the symptoms of bad valves in a compressor?

  1. short cycling
  2. long run cycle
  3. high suction and low head pressure
  4. low suction and high head pressure

3. All of the following are methods of heat transfer EXCEPT:

  1. conduction
  2. compression
  3. convection
  4. radiation
